When I began writing my first novel, it was meant only as a personal challenge, not with the intent to publish. Employed full-time, with a daughter, a house, and too many pets, lead to three years of writing, late into the night. As time passed, I began entertaining the idea of publishing my manuscript. After considerable research, publishing the ‘old fashion way’ was a shot in the dark.

Without the benefit of anyone to open doors for me, name recognition, or time to devote to the process, it would have been virtually impossible to convince a publishing house to even read my manuscript. Self publishing was the only alternative if I truly wanted to see my work in print. But, was it worth the investment? You decide!

I published two novels, with different publishing houses, that offered similar costs, policies and procedures. A ‘no frills’ package will cost a few hundred dollars, which may be the ideal solution for those who just want to see their book in print. Personally, I wanted more and invested a few thousand dollars for each book. Comprehensive packages can cost more than ten thousand dollars, which was out of my league. Both publisher’s packages offered a custom front and back cover, but I chose to design my own. Now, I am not as pleased with the mystery novel cover, “Wallisrose” (“Murder Reigns in…”), and actually changed it for the Kindle edition. Front and back covers were not crisp, but blurry. I also designed the cover for my second novel, a children’s book, ‘Solemn Oath’, published by a different publisher, and am pleased with the cover and printing.

The editors were prompt and explained the reason for their suggestion if it was not obvious. There was flexibility in the choice of text font and size, new chapter paragraph placement and initial character, page number placement, dedication page, and other aspects.
